Opuntia ficus-indica - turksvy, bobbejaansturksvy, boereturksvy, kaalblad, prickly pear, Indian fig, nopal, spineless cactus, sweet prickly pear, Makonde, Umthelekisi
.
Common name: turksvy, bobbejaansturksvy, boereturksvy, kaalblad, prickly pear, Indian fig, nopal, spineless cactus, sweet prickly pear, Makonde, Umthelekisi
Family: Cactaceae (Cactus)
Distribution: Mexico
IUCN Red list: Data deficient
National red list: Not Evaluated
Black list: Listed NEMBA Category 1 Invasive - Must be destroyed/removed by law.
Life form: Succulent plant
Comments: This species was introduced to SA for hedging and fodder, but its drought resistance and profuse reproduction has allowed it to outcompete indigenous flora and become invasive across SA. Spineless cultivars, however, are controlled by livestock grazing and are not listed as invasive. A cochineal insect, Dactylopius ceylonicus, is used as a biological control agent. The sweet fruits are often eaten, but care has to be taken to remove the thick, spiny outer skin.
