Dovyalis caffra

.
.
Common name: Kei-appel, Kei-apple, umQokolo, Umqokolo
Family: Salicaceae (Willow)
Distribution: Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Swaziland
National red list: Least Concern
Comments: These trees, together with 2 other species in the same genus, are of considerable importance as a source of income for some local communities in southern Africa. A trial planting of fruit trees in a desert in Israel included this species. The fruits are edible and make excellent jam. Birds, baboons, antelope and monkeys also like to eat the fruit. By eating the fruits birds help to distribute the seeds.
