Comments: This species is the only species in the genus Stangeria. Stangeriaceae is the smallest family of the cycads with only two genera – Stangeria from South Africa and Bowenia from Australia. Stangeria eriopus is used in traditional medicine as an emetic and to treat headaches and other ailments. The wild population is threatened by over harvesting for the traditional medicine trade and habitat loss.
