Comments: In their native cool, wet habitat, this species becomes the tallest trees in the world at up to 115 m in height and 7.9 m in diameter. Individual trees can reach 1,200–1,800 years.
The large tree at Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden (1955-4/1) was planted by Stellenbosch Magistrate and tree enthusiast Hannes Loots to commemorate the birth of his first son Hannes Loots on 17 January 1955. The Metasequoia over the pathway was planted to commemorate his second son, Frans Loots, on 15 June 1957.
