Taxon

Todea barbara

.
.
Common name: Koningsvaring, King fern
Family: Osmundaceae (Osmunda)
Synonym: Todea africana
Distribution: Australia, New Zealand, South Africa
IUCN Red list: Not evaluated
National red list: Least Concern
Comments: In South Australia there are only a few remnants in disparate localities. In the 1970s, many ancient, 2m tall fern trunks were removed by a plant poacher, possibly under the mistaken belief that they were tree ferns which can be readily transplanted. However, this is not the case with mature king ferns. Some local specialists in native plants have propagated king ferns using spores from this site.
