.
.
Common name: Madagascar ocotillo
Family: Didiereaceae (Didierea)
Synonym: Didierea procera
Distribution: Madagascar
Habitat: Malagasy spiny thicket
IUCN Red list: Least concern
Life form: Succulent plant
Comments: This is an iconic Malagasy spiny thicket species that only occurs in the Madagascan south. Its tall, nearly straight stems are covered in spirally arranged leaves, which are protected from browsing lemurs by parallel spirally arranged spines. Although conservation efforts are in place for its protection, this species is declining due to agricultural expansion, mining and invasive species.
