Protea odorata
.
Family: Proteaceae (Protea)
Distribution: Western Cape: historically Kalbaskraal to Klapmuts in the Swartland; currently only at Joostenbergkloof.
Habitat: slightly saline gravelly and sandy flats at low altitudes recorded from between 120-150 m.a.s.l.
National red list: Critically Endangered
Life form: Evergreen shrub / sub-shrub
Comments: Most of this charismatic and attractive small Protea species' habitat is lost and it survives as a handful of plants at a single site down from more than 1000 plants as recently as 2020. The plant is entirely serotinous, completely dependent on canopy stored seed, and too frequent fires are a key element in the plant's decline, compounding the major impact of historical habitat loss.
