Taxon

Salicornia pillansii

.
.
Family: Amaranthaceae (Amaranth)
Comments: Salt is a dual stressor for organisms, challenging both osmotic regulation and enzymatic systems. Plants adapted to these systems, called halophytes, either exclude entry via root systems, sequester salts in cells, or excrete it through glands.
Salicornia’s are halophytes. And, because of their high salt content, strong antioxidant, and unique phytochemical properties, have become promising agricultural vegetables to be explored in the context of climate change, soil and water salinization and eco-sustainability.
