Taxon

Ixia sarmentosa

.
.
Family: Iridaceae (Iris)
Distribution: Western Cape, Porterville to Kleinmond and Hermanus
Habitat: Seasonally wet, lowland flats and slopes
National red list: Endangered
Life form: Geophyte (bulb, corm or tuber - seasonally dormant)
Comments: Although at first glance this species might resemble many other Ixia species, it flowers late in the season when most other Ixias are setting seed and have characteristically tall, slender leaves. It only occurs in seasonally wet lowlands, but due to extreme habitat loss, only a handful, severely fragmented populations remain.
