IUCN Red list: Not evaluated
National red list: Least Concern
Life form: Geophyte (bulb, corm or tuber - seasonally dormant)
Comments: A beautiful geophytic orchid that is endemic to the Western Cape. Its lovely pink flowers can be seen in spring. This is one of the few South African orchid species that are known to be pollinated by birds. Observations have shown that sunbirds are the main pollinators of this Satyrium. Although it isn’t considered a threatened species, it is becoming increasingly rare due to extensive habitat loss caused by urban and coastal development, alien invasion and crop cultivation.
