Taxon

Pelargonium fergusoniae

.
.
Family: Geraniaceae (Geranium)
Distribution: Western Cape, Hex River Valley to Riversdale
Habitat: Loose sandy soil, alluvium & silcrete fynbos or renosterveld
National red list: Endangered
Life form: Geophyte (bulb, corm or tuber - seasonally dormant)
Comments: Due to habitat loss and sever fragmentation caused by agricultural development, this rare geophyte is facing immense threat with surviving subpopulation declining due to competition from alien invasives.
However, efforts at the ex-situ collection at SUBG have yielded positive results. Through hand pollination and meticulous care, this collection has achieved a significantly higher seed yield than wild populations, offering hope for the conservation of Pelargonium fergusoniae.
