Taxon

Agapanthus africanus

.
.
Family: Amaryllidaceae (Amaryllis)
Distribution: Cape Peninsula to Swellendam
Habitat: Rocky sandstone slopes
National red list: Least Concern
Life form: Geophyte (bulb, corm or tuber - seasonally dormant)
Comments: This is the true Agapanthus africanus, a fussy dwarf species with deep royal blue flowers that is very hard to keep alive in cultivation, and found only from the Peninsula into the Overberg of the Western Capen. Agapanthus praecox, the widely grown species from the E Cape is widely misnamed as A africanus, even in major European botanical gardens.
