Taxon

Leucadendron stellare

.
.
Common name: Stertolbos, Star conebush
Family: Proteaceae (Protea)
Distribution: Aurora to Cape Flats
Habitat: Sandy flats
National red list: Endangered
Life form: Evergreen shrub / sub-shrub
Comments: This delicate and attractive Leucadendron is extremely threatened by recent and ongoing habitat loss. The vast majority of its habitat has been transformed for agricultural purposes. It is very unusual in the genus that the seeds are dropped to the soil seed bank when cones are ripe, rather than being held on the plant as with serotinous Proteaceae.
