Taxon

Amaryllis paradisicola

.
.
Family: Amaryllidaceae (Amaryllis)
Distribution: Northern Cape, Richtersveld
Habitat: Quartzite screes and rock ledges
National red list: Vulnerable
Life form: Geophyte (bulb, corm or tuber - seasonally dormant)
Comments: This rare and range-restricted species from the arid Richtersveld is known from only two localities. Although its isolated habitat should keep it well-protected, it is currently facing threats due to harvesting of the fruit heads by baboons. Although this should not pose such a big threat, the populations of this species are very small, making any impact on it quite severe.
