Distribution:
Napier to Bredasdorp
Habitat:
Calcareous outcrops on coastal sandy or limestone flats
National red list:
Endangered
Life form:
Geophyte (bulb, corm or tuber - seasonally dormant)
Comments:
This is a rare and range-restricted species only known from two locations in the De Hoop area. These two subpopulations are declining due to the threats caused by invasive vegetation. As suggested by the species name, Lachenalia calcicola occurs on calcareous soils in coastal sands or limestone flats. Like many Lachenalias, the flowers of this species is adapted for pollination by honeybees. After pollination, the seeds that form fall onto the ground next to the motherplant and is typically not dispersed very far, which could lead to big colonies of plants.
