Ornithogalum maculatum
.
Family: Asparagaceae (Asparagus)
Distribution: Northern Cape, Western Cape: Central Namaqualand to Malmesbury and east to Prince Albert
Habitat: Shallow soils on rocky outcrops.
National red list: Least Concern
Life form: Geophyte (bulb, corm or tuber - seasonally dormant)
Comments: The species is only found on rocky outcrops, so is often spared when surrounding habitat is lost to clearing crop cultivation. It is still widespread and common and localized threats to some subpopulations are unlikely to cause its extinction.
This is one of few Ornithogalum species not toxic to livestock, and heavy grazing by goats have been observed (Obermeyer 1978).
