Taxon

Xiphotheca guthriei

.
.
Family: Fabaceae (Pea)
Distribution: Botrivier to Potberg
Habitat: Renosterveld and lowland fynbos
National red list: Endangered
Life form: Shrub / sub-shrub
Comments: A beautiful renosterveld shrub with thinly velvety leaves that give it a silvery sheen. Renosterveld soils are more fertile than fynbos soils, which has led to extreme transformation of renosterveld vegetation types in the Western Cape for agricultural purposes. The habitat of this species has been severely transformed due to this and consequently only a handful of populations are left. This species often grows on quartz patches, a microhabitat type with interesting ecological characteristics which are still being studied.
