Taxon

Gladiolus recurvus

.
.
Common name: Voorlopertjie
Family: Iridaceae (Iris)
Distribution: Tulbagh to Somerset West
Habitat: Renosterveld, Alluvium Fynbos
IUCN Red list: Not evaluated
National red list: Vulnerable
Life form: Geophyte (bulb, corm or tuber - seasonally dormant)
Comments: This narrow endemic to the Cape winelands has an entire distribution of less than 4000 km², but now remains at only eight locations as its extremely threatened Renosterveld and alluvial habitats have been nearly entirely lost to wheat, vineyard, olive and deciduous fruit cultivation. All remaining locations are under threat. The reserves that protect two subpopulations are under extreme pressure from invasive alien plants and the impact of clearing operations and herbicide. Other subpopulations are at high risk from agricultural expansion.
