Taxon

Hydnophytum formicarum

.
.
Common name: Ant plants
Family: Rubiaceae (Madder)
Distribution: Southeast Asia
IUCN Red list: Not evaluated
Comments: Ant plants provide habitats for ant colonies high up in the forest canopy and, because of their spines, protect the ants from the elements and predators. Hollow, smooth-walled tunnels with external entrance holes form within the caudex, providing an above-ground home for ant colonies. Likewise, ants provide defense for the plant and prevent tissue damage, swarming to defend their home if disturbed.
