.
Common name: Babiana
Family: Iridaceae (Iris)
Distribution: Piketberg to Somerset West

Life form: Geophyte (bulb, corm or tuber - seasonally dormant)
Comments: A spring-flowering Cape geophyte found on damp renosterveld sites from Piketberg to Somerset West. It has fragrant blue to mauve flowers which make their appearance in spring. This species is most likely pollinated monkey beetles, but in combination with other pollinators like nectarivorous horseflies or bees. Due to pressures like urban expansion and wheat cultivation, this species has lost the majority of its habitat already and is facing continuing decline.
