Oxalis droseroides - oxalis
.
Common name: oxalis
Family: Oxalidaceae (Wood-sorrel)
Distribution: Western Cape
Habitat: Renosterveld, in loamy clay soils on flats and lower slopes
IUCN Red list: Not evaluated
National red list: Endangered
Life form: Geophyte (bulb, corm or tuber - seasonally dormant)
Comments: This oxalis species owes its epiphet "droseroides" to the glandular hairs on its stems and leaves which create the illusion that the plant is perpetually wet. Unfortunaly, this charming plant would be hard to come by in the wild, as only five locations within an area of 259 km^2 still remain where this species occurs. Thanks to crop cultivation, urban expansion and invasive species, much of O. droseroides' habitat has been lost and continues to be transformed.
