Kurogane holly was first described in 1784 by Carl Peter Thunberg, from speciments growing in Japan.
The plants at SUBG are from cuttings made from a Kurogane holly tree at Rai Sanyō Memorial Museum that resprouted in 1949 after the Hiroshima atomic bomb on 6 August 1945.
