Taxon

Aloe thorncroftii

.
.
Common name: aloe
Family: Asphodelaceae
Distribution: Mpumalanga
Habitat: Barberton Serpentine Sourveld
National red list: Near Threatened
Life form: Succulent plant
Comments: Potentially threatened by alien encroachment, there are wattles near the edge of at least one known subpopulation. Serpentine soils are rich in minerals and the range of this species is dotted by disused mining sites. A renewed interest in mining in the area could pose a potential threat of further habitat loss. Because this is a rare, range restricted species that is not widely available in cultivation (it is said to be hard to cultivate) it may also be targeted by succulent collectors.
