Distribution: China: in the southwest of Sichuan province and in the west of Yunnan province.
Habitat: It grows on shady, damp rocks in forests at altitudes from 1500 to 3000m.

Comments: Pilea peperomioides was distributed amongst amateur gardeners from cuttings, without being well-known to botanists. Despite being originally collected in 1906, the actual identity of cultivated plants was not established until the 1980s. It is rare and possibly endangered in the wild, but is still a popular houseplant.
