Taxon

Asplenium bulbiferum

.
.
Common name: hen and chicken fern, Mother spleenwort, Pikopiko
Family: Aspleniaceae (Spleenwort)
Distribution: New Zealand
Habitat: Coastal to subalpine
IUCN Red list: Not evaluated
Life form: Evergreen perennial
Comments: This terrestrail fern is endemic to New Zealand, where it grows in moist lowland forests. It is distinguished by adventitious buds, called gemmae, which produce little plantlets on the tip of the fronds. When the fronds become old and droopy, it touches the soil and the plantlets are able to grow as individual plants.
