Wurmbea stricta - rysblommetjie, vleiblommetjie, water-phlox
.
Common name: rysblommetjie, vleiblommetjie, water-phlox
Family: Colchicaceae
Synonym: Onixotis stricta
Distribution: Western Cape, Northern Cape
Habitat: Seasonal pools, marshes and slow-moving streams
IUCN Red list: Not evaluated
National red list: Least Concern
Life form: Geophyte (bulb, corm or tuber - seasonally dormant)
Comments: This Cape geophyte can be found growing in seasonal marshes and pools or slow-moving streams. It produces pretty white flowers with pink centres in spring, and since these bulbs often grow in large colonies the flowering season can be quite spectacular when it flowers en masse. Despite this species losing about half of its habitat to crop cultivation and urban expansion over the past century, it is still widespread and common.
