Comments: This geophytic species has a large, irregularly shaped tuber clothed in brown scaly bark. The leaves become extremely large obtaining a diameter exceeding 30 cm. The word 'lobatum' refers to the lobed leaves. The long flower stalk bears umbels of up to 20 flowers, dark purple to almost black with a dull yellow margin and base. At night, the scent emitted by the flowers resembles cinnamon, hence the Afrikaans common name “Kaneelblom”. It was cultivated in England as early as 1739.
