Taxon

Aloe arenicola

.
.
Common name: strandveldaalwyn, bont-ot'korrie, sand aloe
Family: Asphodelaceae
Distribution: Northern Cape, Western Cape
Habitat: deep sandy soil in coastal sandveld
National red list: Near Threatened
Life form: Succulent plant
Comments: This range-restricted species only occurs along the South African West Coast, where it grows in deep sandy soils. Historical records indicate that large populations of this species used to exist but overgrazing has caused a severe decline. Open cast mining along the coast has also destroyed much of its habitat over the past few decades.
