Acer palmatum

.
.
Common name: Japanese esdoring, Japanese maple, Smooth Japanese maple
Family: Sapindaceae (Soapberry)
Distribution: Asia
IUCN Red list: Not evaluated
Comments: During the Swedish doctor-botanist Carl Peter Thunberg’s travels through Japan in the late eighteenth century, he secreted out drawings of a small tree that would eventually become synonymous with the high art of oriental gardens. He gave the species name after the hand-like shape of its leaves, similar to the centuries-old Japanese names kaede and momiji, in references to the 'hands' of frogs and babies.
