'Alvim Seidel'
Common name:
Bromelia
Family:
Bromeliaceae (Bromeliad)
IUCN Red list:
Not evaluated
Comments:
It was named after nurseryman and collector Alvim Seidel, who in 1906 founded Seidel Nursery in Brazil. It is presently known as Alvim Seidel Orquidário Catarinense Ltd, and has been in the ownership of the same family for over 100 years. Alvim Seidel dedicated his life to plant collecting, and travelled more than 100,000 kilometres in distant and dangerous parts of Brazil. By his efforts, many species were saved from destruction at a time when the old trees, on which they grew, were being felled.
