Taxon

Oxalis hygrophila

.
.
Common name: Oxalis
Family: Oxalidaceae (Wood-sorrel)
Synonym: Oxalis minuta var. callosa
Distribution: Western Cape
Habitat: Northern inland shale band vegetation
National red list: Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct)
Life form: Geophyte (bulb, corm or tuber - seasonally dormant)
Comments: O. hygrophila is a highly range-restricted habitat specialist and only occurs at one known site. It seems that this species only flowers under specific ecological circumstances: a fire followed by good winter rains. It is severely impacted by climate change due to these factors, and it is possible this species has gone extinct.
