This species is widespread in eastern sub-Saharan Africa, where it occurs in shallow soil pockets and cracks on granite and quartzite outcrops. It tolerates frost, but not fire. It is distinguishable by its striking leaves, which are green in the rainy season, but turns a coppery-red in the dry season.
