Taxon

Schotia brachypetala

.
.
Common name: Huilboerboon, African walnut, Tree fuchsia, Weeping boerbean
Family: Fabaceae (Pea)
Distribution: Southern Africa
IUCN Red list: Not evaluated
National red list: Least Concern
Comments: Reaching up to 22 metres, this massive drought-resistant legume has red flowers at irregular times throughout spring and summer. This makes it a reliable food source during these seasons, producing food and creating a local hub for many species. Parrots and Grey go-away-birds are known to be the main seed dispersers. Humans have historically used the leaves as an antibacterial agent, the bark for tanning, dying, and medicine and the seeds for roasting and eating.
